Oldham County Community Event highlights environmental health concerns
On Tuesday, May 20, the University of Louisville hosted a community event in Oldham County to discuss the health effects of environmental toxins to the community.
The event featured presentations from university researchers on topics including the role of environmental health centers in public health and potential air, water, soil and groundwater pollution in the area. A major emphasis was placed on the environmental and public health concerns associated with energy infrastructure growth, including:
- Health effects from increased fossil fuel use to generate electricity
- Expansion of power stations to support electric power for hyperscale data centers
- Increased air, water, soil, groundwater, noise, light and diesel pollution from hyperscale data centers
A one hour question-and-answer session gave attendees the opportunity to voice concerns and ask questions about the environmental health effects of these developments.
Speakers included:
- David W. Hein, chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology
- Theodore Smith, director of the Center for Healthy Air, Water and Soil
- Sanjay Srivastava, director of the Superfund Research Center
- J. Christopher States, director of the Center for Integrative Environmental Health Sciences
- Natasha DeJarnett, assistant professor in the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute
